We have rolled out eMailSignature to many of our users without too many problems. But one issue is bothering me.

About 10% of our users got the following error when they pressed the "SAVE" button when asked to enter their information into AD. Most users did not have any issues at all with this. Why some and not all?

"An error occurred while trying to save the information. Error code: -2147024891. General access denied error."

Any ideas as to what this error means?

Thanks,
Mark

By default, users have permission to change their own information in AD.

1) Please check AD permissions for users with error and compare with other users?

2) Please eliminate any PC related errors by having one error-user using a OK-user PC?

Please let me have your feed-back ... Thanks!

We are also having this problem and despite checking and changing some AD permissions we cannot resolve it. We need urgent assistance with this please.

Please run the SET command line to troubleshoot Active Directory connection issues for different users.

Please compare users without errors with those having errors.

And what is the result when trying 2) above?

Our problem is not that signatures do not show the information - they do. But the ADUpdate dialog that displays when a user first gets the signature files is not displaying the content which is in AD and does not allow them to add a cell number and save it. They get an error. Not sure how what you have posted here helps us identify that problem?

The error you are reporting will not occur with default AD permission settings. Or your users with this error have some kind of misconfiguration compared to other users.

The procedure I describe will show you users detailed settings and will eliminate any related PC issues.

Exclamation We have two reports on this error (one is properly solved following my advise), while thousands are OK.

Please follow my recommendation and post the results from your analysis.

our specific error number is “An error occurred while trying to save the information. Error code: -2147463168 Automation error)”. It happens on Save for the user which is why I started the reply to the forum I found. My Techs are telling me what you have advised us to do to identify the problem is not going to help. Are you able to please call me on 001 617 310 06027 today please.

I have verified the LDAP string is correct in Cockpit.
The error posted above was a permissions problem that we resolved.
The error we are getting when some users press save is "An error occurred while trying to save the information. Error code: -2147463168 Automation error".
Also note the ADUpdate screen is completely blank. Not even the read-only name fields at top are displayed.
These users do have the correct default AD permissions. We have also verified by a custom script that these users can update their personal information in their AD account. We can not find anything different about these accounts with the problem compared to the accounts that work fine. Please help. Thank you.

This error indicate currupt MDAC on the client.

the error you say is a different number to the one in our error by one - your error ends with a 9, ours ends with an 8 - is this definitely the same problem/resolution?

'Automation error' is MDAC related - the numbers are not important.

Hello,
This can not be MDAC related.
The same workstation I am using for testing works for everyone except the problem accounts. If MDAC had a problem it would not work for anyone on the workstation.

Correct - it cannot be MDAC related if some users are OK and others have failure logging on to the same workstation.

But using a test workstation only add more possible causes and you cannot conclude if the result is the same when the user logon.

Exclamation Please follow these steps and do not use your test workstation or test accounts.

User A is OK and can save information in AD without error.
User B get an error while trying to save information in AD.

  1. In Cockpit force update next time for user A and B.
  2. Go to user A (or use remote software). Verify that AD information can be saved without error.
  3. Go to user B. Verify error during save.
  4. Force update next time for user B in your Cockpit.
  5. Ask user B to follow you to user A.
  6. Ask user B to logon to user A's workstation.
  7. Please post result and any error message during save.

Thanks ...

If you prefer, I'll be happy to assist with the troubleshooting and will send you a WebEx invitation.
From one PC I need access to the PC's of user A and B.

I just follwed these instructions and got the same results.
User A was able to update their AD info without error. On User A's workstation, User B recieved the error: "An error occurred while trying to save the information. Error code: -2147463168 Automation error".

Please forward to jf(at)officeaddon.com:
  1. SET command for user A.
  2. SET command for user B.
  3. Log file (Cockpit, Help -> Diagnostics) for user B

Thanks.
